How to get there:
By car: In the village of Bamburgh. Turn off the A1, south of Berwick upon Tweed along the B1342. Signposted Bamburgh and Seahouses.
By public transport: Regular bus services from Berwick upon Tweed.

THE REBUILT MUSEUM NOW OPEN

The new RNLI Grace Darling museum in Bamburgh, Northumberland, opened to the public on Tuesday 18 December.

The old museum closed 2 years ago for a major redevelopment project, which saw all but the front facade of the building demolished to make way for the new two-storey museum.

The new museum has improved access, much more space and better conditions for storing and displaying the unique Grace Darling collection. It also includes a shop and an education, research and community room. The museum is managed by the RNLI Heritage Trust.

The centrepiece of the museum is Grace Darling's boat, which was in storage at Beamish Museum for 2 years. A new feature of the collection is a 2.5m replica of the Longstone lighthouse, where Grace and her family lived.

Grace Darling became a national heroine after she and her father rowed a fishing coble through stormy seas from the lighthouse to rescue sailors on the stricken SS Forfarshire in 1838. One hundred years after the rescue, the original museum opened in her honour.
