Trimontium Roman Fort

Description: The most important Roman military complex between Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall guarded and secured the crossing of the Tweed at Newstead in the 2nd century AD. Excavations have revealed some of what was going on there, but much has still to be done. Helpful boards and viewing platforms. Guided walks arranged throughout the summer months.

How to get there:
By car: The Trimontium Site – in the village of Newstead, one mile east of Melrose.
The Trimontium Walk – starts at the 'Three Hills' Roman Heritage Centre in Melrose Square.

'The Trimontium Walk', from Melrose to Leaderfoot Viaduct (the high spot) and back; prior booking not required. (‘Tri-montium’ is Latin for ‘the fort at the foot of the three Eildon Hills’) Includes volunteer local guide(s), juice/cup of tea and biscuits in Newstead Village Hall.

Good dogs are welcome.

This is the eighth season of a moderate 5 mile/ 8 km walk, guided each week by Trimontium Trust members.

We leave from the ‘Three Hills’ Roman Heritage Centre in Melrose Market Square, at 13.30 hrs, and go via the Mercat Cross, Abbey Street, Melrose Abbey South Front and the fieldside Prior's Walk to enjoy Newstead, 'the oldest inhabited village in Scotland' (with walled gardens, sundials, ancient stones and Masonic ruin). Thereafter we see the Millennium Milestone; the Trimontium Stone; the Roman fort and four annexes; views of Eildon Hill North and the Tweed Valley from the site; the Roman Empire’s most Northerly modest military amphitheatre & 'hidden' Roman Dere Street bridge; the three bridges over Tweed at Leaderfoot from the high Viaduct level; the leafy lane to Broomhill; the view across to the Trimontium Stone Summerhouse at Drygrange (with Scott's View and Old Melrose in the distance); the Roman road from Broomhill to Newstead; tea and comfort station at the Village Hall; and return to Melrose by Prior's Walk (now become Westward Ho!) or the monks’ riverside Battery Wall for 1715 hrs approximately.

The charges - Adults £3; concessions £2.50; Schoolchildren Free - includes tea.
Sturdy shoes advised. Walkers meet at the Heritage Centre in the Ormiston, Market Square, MELROSE 13.20 hrs. Move off 13.30 hrs. Back in Melrose 17.15 hrs approx.
