Description: Standing on Denholm Green is the monument to Dr John Leyden, scholar and poet, who was born in Denholm in 1775. He was a very highly talented scholar who assisted Sir Walter Scott with his collection of the material for his "Minstrelsy of the Scottish Borders".
Later, Leyden went overseas and, with Sir Stamford Raffles and Lord Minto was instrumental in the founding of Singapore. He died in Java at the age of 36 years.
