The Farmhouse - Kirk Yetholm

As life changing moves Marilyn and Jonathan Bridger would have been pushed to come up with a starker contrast.

Six years ago the couple decided to swap the hustle and bustle of urban life in Surrey for remote rural splendour.

Today they run a delightful guesthouse in Kirk Yetholm, a tiny community buried deep in the Scottish Borders and a stone's throw from one of the UK's most famous finishing lines - the 270-mile Pennine Way.

When they moved to the hamlet they took over an old farmhouse complete with stables, barn, dairy and workshop - badly in need of some love and attention. Marilyn and Jonathan set about restoring the complex, once a thriving corn mill with a history stretching back hundreds of years.

The Farmhouse now offers two comfortable rooms in the main building, one en-suite and the other with a private bathroom and two ensuite rooms in the annexe. For those preferring a self-catering stay in this beautiful part of the world the adjoining Farmhouse Cottage (the annexe) offers outstanding accommodation.

“We set out to provide quality accommodation in a relaxed setting where

people can feel at home and that formula has established The Farmhouse as a popular port of call since we opened for business.

“We cater to the convenience of our guests and prepare meals at times to suit them. Everything is freshly cooked using home grown vegetables and local produce wherever possible,” said Marilyn.

The Farmhouse is a magnet for walkers from all over the world - and they are spoilt for choice in the Borders. If the Pennine Way is a step too far they can choose from St Cuthbert's Way from Melrose to Lindisfarne (which passes the door), or numerous local walks.

Providing transport to daily start and finish points on walks is another convenience to be introduced this year for Farmhouse guests. Themed breaks for those interested in painting, photography, bird watching and Health and beauty breaks - complete with hot tub - are commencing in the Spring of 2010.
