George and Abbotsford

THE GEORGE and Abbotsford - more affectionately known as the G&A - has been part of Melrose's enduring visitor appeal for well over 200 years.

Originally the George Inn, it was a key stop for coaches on the Edinburgh to Jedburgh and Newcastle run, with a reputation not only for looking after travellers but the horses that got them to journey's end.

The addition of Abbotsford is linked to the fact that Sir Walter Scott booked in hotel while his home - called Abbotsford - was being built.

The G&A has 30 bedrooms and is a particular favourite with parties visiting the Borders for fishing and golfing breaks.

“We support the Freedom of the Fairways initiative and organise golf passports to play local courses.

“There are 21 courses, including the Roxburghe at Kelso and the Cardrona golf and country club, near Peebles that are championship standard. Freedom of the Fairways offers lots of options for all age groups,” said Phil.

The G&A can cater for all occasions with the hotel’s Scott Dining Room and Waverley Room able to seat 60 and 120 guests respectively.
