Scottish Borders Walking Festival

The 15th Scottish Borders Walking Festival, part of Homecoming Scotland, promises to be the biggest and best ever.

After launching the trend for walking festivals in Scotland, in 1995, the Scottish Borders Walking Festival has achieved a loyal following that enjoys the stunning scenery and friendly atmosphere of this relaxed festival.

Taking place between 5-13th September, this year’s programme boasts over 60 walks covering more than 440 miles.

Along with the extended programme, the festival has launched dedicated website (www.borderswalking.com), providing the up-to-date information on walks, maps, a full programme of social events, special walkers offers and an online credit card booking facility.

‘In the Footsteps of the Reivers’ is a 9-day festival of themed walks, celebrating the lively and often colourful history of the Border Reivers.

The festival’s knowledgeable walk leaders look forward to imparting a wealth of information about the landscape, the distinctive culture of the Scottish Borders and the fascinating history of the Border Reivers.

Each year the festival has a new base, allowing regular participants to experience different parts of the Scottish Borders and new walks. This year's festival is based in the towns and areas surrounding Jedburgh and Hawick. Walkers can look forward to rolling hills, beautiful river valleys, extensive woodlands and the more challenging terrain of the Cheviot Hills.

The expanded walking programme has something to suit all ages and abilities, from a two-mile stroll through the Beautiful gardens of Monteviot on the bank of the River Teviot, to a challenging 14-mile hike starting from the 15th century Hermitage Castle.

There is also an extensive range of social activities designed to keep the visitors entertained across the 9 days of the festival. Most of them can also be booked in advance on the website, allowing visitors to plan their trip in advance.

As well as a Gala Dinner at Ferniehirst Castle, traditional music evenings and introductions to both fly fishing and Nordic walking, there are also plenty of opportunities to explore the best the Scottish Borders has to offer; tours of Floors Castle, the largest inhabited castle in Scotland and Lochcarron, the world's leading tartan manufacturer among them.
